October - Vulcan Gas Octopus Poster 1968 [ Back to Gallery ]

I've become a real fan of the Vulcan Gas Company posters as they produced some of the best psychedelic posters of the Sixties and this certainly qualifies as one of the best in that series. Typically called "The Octopus" for obvious reasons, Wittif was the artist whom I know little about, crafted this beautiful poster well before Ringo Star wrote and recorded the song "Octopus's Garden" for the Beatles Abbey Road Album which was released in 1969 - when I look at this poster it is the first thing that comes to my mind as to what the Beatles were visualizing and singing about when they recorded the song.

While the Vulcan Gas Company posters were some of the best psychedelic posters of the sixties, the series lacked one major thing and that was the lack big name groups and recording artists on their posters during that time. Other than a poster for Janis Joplin & Big Brother and The Holding Company (an event that didn't happen) and some posters with The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, an Austin, Texas band that attained a national cult psychedelic following, the rest of the posters in the series for the most part were local bands that did not make it big in the music scene at the time.

Regardless of the lack of big name recording artists, if you're looking for some of the best art of the sixties you should really explore the Vulcan Gas Company series. As I have already stated, they contain some of the most beautiful and best psychedelic posters of this time and an added plus with this series is most were produced in large formats of 22 x 28 inches - somewhat typical of Texas always wanting to do things in a big way! Another really great addition to the Vintage Concert Poster Collection.
